Coconut Oil

What’s all the fuss about Coconut Oil?

At CoolWag we have a tub of Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil on hand so that if your dog develops a hot spot or has another boo boo; or you request that we add it to their diet, we can accommodate. We use it on our own dogs!

SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE

Organic Virgin Coconut Oil… hmmmm. Doesn’t sound that amazing. Why is it different from other oils and why would you ever suggest putting it on my dog.. wouldn’t that make him a greasy mess? If he eats it, won’t he get fat? Lauric acid, a medium chain fatty acid, can help prevent bacterial and viral infections–has anti-fungal properties–and is low in the bad cholesterol and high in the good cholesterol… Coconut Oil has this! Read on…

Too much of anything is a bad thing and that goes for Coconut Oil, too. The recommended dosage is 1 teaspoon for every 10 pounds of body weight per day; however, it is not a good idea to introduce that amount all at once. It is better to build up to it or you can end up with some nasty diarrhea. Now if your dog already has diarrhea and you are trying to help them get through whatever it is faster, introducing Coconut Oil at a higher rate might be ok. It was for my dog.

Can it make him fat, yes and if he has other issues like pancreatitis it can be harmful which is why we suggest consulting your veterinarian before introducing it to your dog’s diet (if you veterinarian doesn’t know about it… hmmmm… there are links at the bottom that are from Universities, Holistic veterinarians, and other organizations like the AKC…).

TESTIMONY

We have a 113 pound Cane Corso who developed severe diarrhea and vomiting. We withheld food for 24 hours and he seemed to recover but when we reintroduced a bland diet in small portions, it started up again. It was a Sunday and he was NOT LETHARGIC so I decided to make an appointment at the vet the next day. In an effort to try to help him out with whatever it was that was ailing him, I decided to give him a whole cup of Coconut Oil (it is solid form at room temperature so easy to give—most dogs love it so that makes it easy as well). The next day (still NOT LETHARGIC) he went out side and had a normal BM… no more vomiting either. So.. did the coconut oil kill whatever was in his stomach/intestines and heal him or was it just the timing? We will never know but what I do know is that he was better. Please note that if he had exhibited any signs of lethargy or stopped wanting to eat or drink, I would have rushed him to the emergency vet…but that was not the case.

As far as a topical solution to hot spots, red bumps, dry skin and even oily-stinky skin, Coconut oil can also be a solution. I have witnessed hot spots heal in a few days vs. weeks. I’ve rubbed it all over my Boston Terrier who had developed red bumps on her paws. She was biting at them and generally uncomfortable for over a few weeks. Benadryl helped temporarily but not long term. It wasn’t until I rubbed the Coconut Oil into her paws that they healed and went away completely (she has not had a flare up in over 3 months after having them for a few weeks). The anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties of Coconut Oil are proven.. so why not use them!

If you have a dog that has greasy stinky skin, rubbing coconut oil all over him, letting it sit for five or ten minutes and then shampooing him with a mild, non-scented shampoo can clear that up as well. It may sound like you are making him a greasy mess but if he is already a mess, why not give it a try. You and your dog may be VERY happy with the results.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

OK.. so there are many reports and studies that show that the acids in coconut oil can kill bacteria, viruses, and fungus but people still don’t believe it. Why? I don’t know because the information is easy to get. Coconut Oil is comprised of more Medium Chain Triglycerides than Olive, Conola, etc. oils. (If you are planning on switching to Coconut Oil for your own diet make sure you read this because it is not enough… you still need Long chain fats. Here are a few links:

Increasing their immune system with vaccinations and things like herbal supplements, Coconut Oil, Probiotics, and a healthy diet and exercise are some things that we can all do together to help to keep their bodies strong enough t

o fight illnesses and live a long and healthy life. If your dog does get Canine Influenza, Giardia, Bordetella, or any other upper respiratory infection, Coconut Oil has some proven benefits that can shorten the recovery period. As usual, consult with your veterinarian to make sure this is right for your dog before trying it.

Bordetella “Kennel Cough”: What You Need to Know and What CoolWag does about it.

What do we do to try to prevent Bordetella from spreading at CoolWag?

  1. All dogs are required to be up-to-date on their Bordetella vaccine in order to enter the CoolWag facility.
  2. We have very high ceilings and exhaust fans that replace the air indoors every four hours.
  3. We are very well ventilated.
  4. We have huge play areas so that the dogs are not too close to each other.
  5. We disinfect the floor and walls with WysiWash at least once a day and when it is busy, twice a day.
  6. We have brick or astroturf with a gravel base which makes it easy to disinfect the outside and inside play yards.
  7. We disinfect the water bowls with WysiWash daily.
  8. Staff is trained to look for any signs of a Bordetella infection, as well as any other ailments that our dogs may have. We isolate any dogs that are coughing and notify their human parents.
  9. Wysiwash is basically pool shock but it is 125 times more effective at killinggerms than Bleach (which is a proven killer of the Bordetella virus).

At CoolWag we take the job of keeping your dog safe very seriously. Bordetella is like a cold that kids can pass to each other in school, or people can get at the office. It is airborne and symptoms don’t show up for 3-7 days after exposure. Most vaccinated dogs do not get it but some do, but usually in a milder form. Some dogs get it and never show symptoms (just like humans).  Increasing their immune systems with the vaccine and things like herbal supplements, Coconut Oil, Probiotics, and a healthy diet and exercise is another thing that we can all do together to help to keep their bodies strong enough to fight it, if they are exposed to it. If your dog does get Bordetella or any other upper respiratory infection, Coconut Oil has some proven benefits that can shorten the recovery period. Giardia..What you need to know and what CoolWag does about it.

What do we do to prevent Giardia from spreading at CoolWag?

1. All yards are covered in AstroTurf with a gravel base which allows us to disinfect the turf and gravel. It also keeps moist soil and water puddles from being exposed to the dogs—which is often a carrier of Giardia cysts.

2.  We treat all poop like it is infected, because many dogs have Giardia cysts, it is impossible to know whether a cyst has been shed or not. To be safe, we just treat them all as if they have a parasite which means we REMOVE IT IMMEDIATELY and DISINFECT the area immediately with Wysiwash.

3. Wysiwash is basically pool shock but it is 125 times more affective at killing Giardia cysts and other germs than Bleach (which is a proven killer of Giardia).

4. To learn more about Giardia, there is an excellent article here: http://www.bestfriendsvet.com/library/parasites/giardia/

At CoolWag we take the job of keeping your dog safe very seriously. Giardia is part of the environment we live in – ponds, puddles, the ground, etc. Having turf on gravel and Wysiwash and a sense of urgency about removing poop is the most effective method we have of keeping your dog safe from parasites. Increasing their immune systems with things like herbal supplements, Coconut Oil, Probiotics, and a healthy diet and exercise is another thing that we can all do together to help to keep their bodies strong enough to fight it—because, if they are outside, they WILL be exposed to it.
